How to Measure Your Ring Size at Home

Getting your ring size right is the first step to finding a piece you'll wear forever. Whether you're shopping for yourself or choosing a gift, an accurate measurement means your ring will fit beautifully from the moment it arrives.

Here's how to measure at home — no jeweller visit needed.

Why Ring Size Matters

A ring that's too tight is uncomfortable and difficult to remove. One that's too loose risks slipping off. Fine jewellery is made to be worn daily, so the fit is as important as the design itself.

Method 1: String or Paper Strip

This is the most reliable method for measuring a finger you don't already have a ring for.

1. Cut a thin strip of paper or use a piece of string approximately 10 cm long.
2. Wrap it snugly around the base of the finger you want to measure — not too tight, not too loose.
3. Mark where the paper or string overlaps with a pen.
4. Lay it flat against a ruler and measure the length in millimetres. This is your finger's circumference.
5. Use the conversion chart below to find your ring size.

Tip: Measure the widest part of your finger. For most people, this is the knuckle. Your ring needs to pass over it comfortably.

Method 2: Measure an Existing Ring

If you already own a ring that fits the correct finger perfectly, this method is even simpler.

1. Place the ring on a flat surface.
2. Measure the inner diameter — the distance across the inside of the ring — in millimetres.
3. Match that measurement to the chart below.

Tips for an Accurate Measurement

• Time of day matters. Fingers are slightly larger in the evening and after physical activity. Measure at the end of the day for the most accurate result.
• Temperature affects size. Cold weather causes fingers to shrink; warm weather causes them to swell. Measure at room temperature.
• Dominant hand runs larger. If you plan to wear the ring on your right hand, measure that hand specifically.
• When between sizes, size up. It's easier to resize a ring down than up, and a slightly larger fit is more comfortable day-to-day.
